Understanding the Drop-deck Design

The defining characteristic of a drop-deck trailer is the step between the upper deck and the lower deck. The upper deck typically sits above the fifth wheel coupling, housing the kingpin and often providing space for a load that can rest higher. The lower deck extends from the base of the gooseneck to the rear of the trailer and sits closer to the road surface. This lowered deck height — generally between 30 and 36 inches when loaded — provides an extra vertical clearance of roughly 18 to 24 inches compared to a standard flatbed.
